Shinyribs is nothing if not infectious. The alter ego of former Gourds frontman Kevin Russell, Shinyribs is a collection of country, bluegrass, soul, rock, backed by supreme songwriting and a groovingly undeniable live show. Folks who originally came to only know Russell via his former band’s cover of Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice” will be caught off guard by his thoughtful and dynamic songwriting. Russell details life in Texas and beyond with lyrics that are chock full of every emotion under the sun. Under the Shinyribs banner, Russell has released two standout albums, Well After Awhile and Gulf Coast Museum. Those two records garnered widespread critical praise and began a slow burn buzz among Texas Music fans. They contain a unique and varied sound that many fans were seeking. On the strength of those albums, ‘Ribs began playing more gigs. It has been at these gigs that Shinyribs has been established as the top live act in Texas at the moment. Russell puts on a show in a manner that would recall James Brown at the Apollo if he jammed a ukulele between splits. Cool cover songs find a spot right alongside the best of Russell’s originals, and don’t sleep on the Russell-led crowd conga line. We are excited for Shinyribs to headline and close out Day 1 of Greenfest at River Road. It’s sure to be a party…bring your dancin’ shoes. -BB
