10 Years of Celebrating Life in Luling

Young Tom Webb passed away in a tragic car accident at the tender age of 16 back in 2001.  That spring, his family buoyed by Tom’s love of music and his sister Tori’s enterprising spirit to commemorate her beloved little brother, kicked off what has become one of the top charity events in Texas Music over the past decade.  The annual Celebration of Life has been a late spring ritual in Texas Music since 2003.  People from all over the state descend upon the sleepy Watermelon Thump Pavilion in its Thump offseason to support the Webb family and the cause.  That cause is a scholarship fund for continuing education.

To date, the benefit has granted 87 $2000 scholarships!

Cory Morrow led the charge all those years ago to make this event a success…and he’s still leading the way.  Luckily, many other artists have followed Cory’s heart and donated their time and talents to this wonderful cause.  With heavy hearts, the Webb family has decided to wrap up the benefit after 10 years.  Their hoping to make year ten, the best one yet and set the scholarship up for several years of future, successful funding.

This is an event that I’ve attended 8 of the 10 years and can personally vouch for the specialness of.  If you’re going to be in the area for the Lone Star Music Awards and can spare the time, I encourage you to drop by for just a bit.  You won’t regret it, I promise.  I still get goosebumps thinking back to seeing Cory Morrow sing Billy Joe Shaver’s “I’m Gonna Live Forever” at those early benefit shows.  A fitting song for the benefit.  A fitting song for Tom.  Everything about this lovely family and noteworthy charitable concert will live…forever.
