The Departed, Uncle Lucius, Jonathan Terrell and some other tunes

I finally tore away from the Uncle Lucius experience just long enough to check out The Departed. The experience kind of reminds me about my first Wide Spread Panic show, but not. I’m not talking about music here. I’m talking about the experience of live music.
I compare it to my Panic experience for a few reasons. I, like everyone else, don’t really know The Departed catalog just yet. When I went to Panic with my cousin John David it was the same experience minus cow pasture party favors. I didn’t know a song really, but I knew Panic did a mean Billy Joe Shaver cover of “Old Chunk of Coal”. I will be a diamond someday by the way in case any of you are wondering… Point being I knew nothing going in really, but who the players were and what they had already accomplished from previous endeavors.
The only thing I was familiar with at The Panic show was the paraphernalia they were slangin’ in the parking lots. I walked into The Departed with familiarity of a couple of YouTube videos and a belief. I got there late so I only got to hear AM Country Heaven and my opportunity to Cry Pretty by the opener Mr. Eady. That song AM Country Heaven is really good, really good. I didn’t know what to expect from The Departed really. Would it sound like Ragweed? The answer is no to that question people, but we will be alright from all this debauchery. There will be life after Ragweed. This band is going to make some noise. There is just too much talent here for it to go down any other way. Dave Bowen is a beast on the pots and pans. Everyone that knows me understands I’m all about the rhythm section. The tunes have to drive for me to buy into it. Dave and Jeremy seem to have a handle of things on that end. I think once I know the songs after the album drops in May I will have a whole new understanding and perspective of what The Departed is putting down. I am however way intrigued here. Way!
Now… It’s no secret that Uncle Lucius is my favorite Texas Swamp Rock Soul Band out there. I’ve seen these guys an unhealthy amount of times and the infection seems to be spreading. I went this past Friday night to The Continental Club to see my favorite Uncle for the first time is a couple of months. They just got home from a Colorado, Utah, California and back to Texas run. The Continental was sold out, packed, full to capacity. I walked outside to burn one down and they were turning folks away at the door. I’m glad I listened to my friend Trisha once and got there early for a hand stamp. I would have been pissed if I would have had to slip in the back door with Billy Gibbons to make it all happen. Just three months ago when I last seen them at the same spot this sold out business wasn’t the case. Being the music snob that I am I was pissed that I had to share with so many, but all good that the momentum of Uncle Looseness is really taking hold. The boys from East Texas and San Antonio brought the thunder on Friday. They played a handful of new songs that I can’t wait to drop. I’ve had the pleasure of working with these guys on their new web site and it’s been tits to be part of something so damn cool. If you have yet to experience the loose of Uncle Lucius check out there tour dates and catch a show. You will in no shape or form be disappointed. That’s a guarantee from Hogleg himself.
Jonathan Terrell is another guy from Longview, Texas that you have to go see. I went for a little heartache therapy last week and caught him twice in one night. This guy is one of the hardest working dudes out there. It seems like he is playing somewhere almost every night of the week. Jonathan played an acoustic set at the Mohawk mostly compiled of a bunch of sad country songs. I thought we went to see live music to make us feel better. BULLSHIT! Bullshit they say… haha Jonathan is a friend of mine so I wanted to say, “Hey brother, can we get a little something with some lift to it here.” Heck, by the time I left there Schlitz had become the catalyst of where my night and life were headed. If I were a man of emotional stability instead of a man of steady emotions I would have been fine. We all know that is not always the case at hand. It’s ok, I’m as uncomfortable with me as anyone. 😉 J.T. has a two piece rock band called Not in the Face. Once he finished up at the Mohawk and I dried my weeping eyes Miss Dean and I headed down to Beer Land to check out the Rock and Roll show. The show was going off. The energy here was second to none. I knew when he took his shirt off that shit was about to start popping off and it did. There were no sad country songs in this set. It was put the hammer down rock and roll. I was just thankful that rock and roll closed my night out instead of tears in my beer. Thanks JT, I will be back!

Here is a video of Jonathon with his band Not in the Face… and for the record I do want to see the look on your face when you find out my love is a lie. Damn that’s greasy!!!! Love it!
What else… I’m going to see Lucero on Tuesday at Emo’s. Always a good time. It’s all just sixes and sevens to me now. Thinking about dropping in the Saxon on Wednesday for some Mystiqueros. It’s been a long minute. I hear Ryan James is playing in a band called High Horses after Walter. I might need to check that out. Ryan James out of retirement….. I’m in. 😉 I’m also thinking Cory at Antone’s this next weekend will be a good time. I think I heard my Uncle was in Pflugerville this upcoming weekend too. Who knows where I’ll end up? It’s great to have options in Austin, Texas. 🙂 If you see me out please come by and say hello. The water is on me. Hope all this makes sense. It never does to me. haha
How about that new Drop? Hell yes!
