Song That Sold Me…

When it comes to music, I know what I like and what works for me, but music is much like religion and politics… It’s each to their own in my opinion. What I also know is that this music, and more importantly, the people I’ve come to know because of this music, has largely impacted the past five years of my life. When I think about Galleywinter what resonates with me most is that it’s a “place” where the music brings people together.
So, with that being the preface -How does a girl from Missouri via North Carolina come to be sitting on her bed at 7:30pm on Friday night writing for a website solely dedicated to the Texas Country music scene?
The story is actually quite long, but it all began on Tuesday, August 23, 2005 when a group of girls on the OSU rodeo team decided to take a last minute trip to Weatherford, Okla. to celebrate a friend’s birthday. That night one of the girls happened to leave a CD she’d burned in my truck. Included on that CD were artists such as Jason Boland, Kevin Fowler, Wade Bowen, Bleu Edmondson, and Aaron Watson. I still have the playlist labeled in my iTunes as “My First Red Dirt CD.”
“Somewhere Down In Texas” was on the disc and will always be a Top 5 on my list of Texas Country favorites, but what sold me on the scene, and will forever go down as my absolute favorite song, is Honeybrowne’s “Texas Angel.” It’s a known fact among my music friends that I’m a sucker for the sappy love songs, and truth be told I don’t see a damn thing wrong with it. I think we can all agree that this scene has plenty of those to go around…
The dots that started on that night are a crooked line to connect, but they’ve brought me to where I am now. Galleywinter, and the relationships I’ve made through this “place”, have several dots with their name on it. My questions are… Where did your dots begin? What song(s) sold you on this scene? And…How did you end up “here?”
