Heroes and Angels at the Bowen Classic

During the tragedy in West, John Dempsy was one of the first responders.  An ordinary citizen propelled into an unimaginable hell, JD was in the thick of the post-explosion madness helping out.  At one point he even found an elderly woman that had been displaced from her rest home.  Her last name is Beheler.  She is my grandmother. JD got a hold of us in the midst of the chaos to let us know she was okay before moving on to help others.  In the aftermath of the tragedy, JD felt compelled to write a song about the things he witnessed, the friends he lost and the scars the town will never fully overcome.  It’s called “Heroes and Angels”.  When the Bowen Classic planning was happening, I talked to Wade about having JD come out and play the song because I thought it would be a powerful moment, and a testament to the courage of the town in overcoming the blast.  Wade graciously agreed and we got JD on the show.  A powerful moment it was indeed.  I was proud to introduce JD to the crowd and I hope this leads more people to discover his music.  Over the course of the weekend, Wade was able to raise over $250,000 for West.  We were proud to be involved again and can’t wait for next year.  Helping others through music doesn’t get much cooler.
