August 2004

Brad’s Corner is a monthly commentary written by Brad about whatever he feels like. It’s supposed to be funny, interesting and thought provoking, but most geniuses are misunderstood. Check out the August 2004 edition of Brad’s Corner and see what’s on his mind.

August is the only month that can make me think about leaving Texas. Sure, I only ponder on it for about two seconds while I dream of how great life would be in Alaska chilled out in an igloo with a hot Eskimo chick and a bottle of whiskey. But, I ponder it nonetheless. It amuses me to hear folks from other states gripe about their heat. They complain when the thermometer passes 87. I look forward to the day when the high around here is back down to 87. August drudges up memories of the end of summer as well. When I was a kid we didn’t start the school year till after Labor Day and ended it before Memorial Day. These days, kids start the first week of August and go until the first week of June. The legislators, in their infinite, wisdom keep adding more school days to the calendar. However, they are forgetting one crucial fact: The more days the kids are there, the more days they show crappy G & PG rated movies. Really, there are only so many days someone can teach the kids how to pass a standardized test. Another fun August memory is those two-a-day football practices. Boy, those were fun, weren’t they? Middle aged coaches that smell of too much Old Spice and too much bourbon the night before re-living their glory days by yelling at you under the 105 degree sun. I’m convinced that our coaches in high school wore us out so much during pre-season training that we weren’t worth a damn during the season. It couldn’t have had anything to do with the fact that we spent more time in the huddle planning who was going to buy the beer after the game than as to what formation we were in. My senior year we only won a single game. 1-9. I’m convinced that I learned more that year than the kids who won the state championship that season. I learned that life wasn’t always going to be easy and I was going to have to find my own way. I learned to not take everything so seriously, enjoy the moment, find good in all bad situations, and it made me grow up much quicker.

Minor chords: – Thanks to everyone who came out to the Randy Rogers Band/Galleywinter CD Preview Party/River Float. It was a helluva time. One of the most fun weekends I’ve ever had. Big shout out to Robin at 36 D Management for helping me put it together. Folks, I can’t say it enough, Randy’s new album “Rollercoaster” is amazing. It will blow you away. It’ll be released on the 24th of this month. Stay tuned for pre-ordering details. Make sure and buy multiple copies and continue to request the song at your favorite local radio stations. Hell, even call the ones you don’t like!

-John Kerry chose John Edwards as his running mate. I’m thinking if it wasn’t for that pesky citizenship thing he would have gone with Fabio.

-And why hasn’t G Dub dumped Dick Cheney? I mean the man is so greasy I bet he could change your oil in 4 minutes and piss off everyone at Kwik Lube. He just represents all that’s wrong with politics. He’s slimy, arrogant, rich, condescending, and crooked. He should go work for a record label with qualifications like that.

-Ryan Turner and Brandon Jones both have CD projects coming out soon. Check these guys out! -This month’s recommended movie is: Napoleon Dynamite -This month’s recommended album is: Mark David Manders—“Tales From the Couch Circuit”

-Thoughts and prayers sent out to my good friend Doug Moreland who lost his beloved best friend Holly. She’ll be missed. But Doug promises me that he will train one of her grandchildren to join him onstage.

-Have you ever wondered why they have Braille at DRIVE THRU ATM’s?

-We’re coming up on the 1 year anniversary of this crazy place. Thanks to everyone who hangs out here, y’all drive this crazy engine, I just work here.

-Britney Spears is engaged to marry a guy that’s so white trash his mother must’ve been one of those pregnant women you see on COPS smoking cigarettes and assaulting officers all the while never spilling her Old Milwaukee.

-Nobody submitted any questions for this month. So I didn’t get to open the Galleywinter Institute for Human and Spiritual Development. We’ll try again next month. -George’s is still my favorite place to go for some reason.
