How did Galleywinter start? It started on the "Sunday side of a road trip weekend." What else would you expect? Galleywinter is the child of an idea that was called Tore Up From The Floor Up.com. Tore Up was created by a couple of road trip assassins of the blacktop highway. These road warriors would later be known as Woodrow and Hogleg. Woodrow and I, Hogleg, were going to so many Pat Green shows that we figured somebody should document these road-trip stories. It started when we were on our way back from a weekend at Sneed Wheelers Texas Roadhouse in Huntsville and The Annual Spring Ho Festival in Lampasas, Texas. On the way back home we also stopped off at Gruene Hall and George's Bar in Waco. Pull out your Texas roadmap and figure that one out. Our livers were riding in the backseat that Sunday afternoon. Woodrow turned to me and asked, "You need another beer?" I simply said, "I'm Tore Up!" Woodrow replied, "Tore Up From The Floor Up." Our little Pat Green road trip website was born.
I was a relatively new web designer at the time, so most of my designs ended up being pretty bad. But where they lacked in design principle, I made up for with my passion for Pat Green and his music. Our small website began getting some traffic because of the Pat Green Bulletin Board. Pat's management team added a link from Pat's website to our modest fan site. The response and support were completely overwhelming. My e-mail inbox went from getting a couple of spam emails a day to dozens of request to join and be part of our movement. At the time we didn't have anything to join really, so I just started adding everyone's name to a page called "The GreenHeads." It wasn't long before we filled that page up with Pat fans just like us.
It was through all of this that I met my "yang", Ryan "The Tank" Hargrave. He told me he really liked what our website stood for and wanted to help me out too. I really needed another web guy to help me, so we formed a partnership and friendship that is the foundation of everything you see today. Tank really made a difference with the structure and direction of the website and community. We partnered up with another friend named Dan "Bueno" Robinson and sponsored the First Annual Pat Green Fan Appreciation party. We called this party "GreenFest". It was held at Georges Bar in Waco, Texas. We had a couple of hundred friends show up at Georges on a Saturday Afternoon in January to drink Big O's and listen to Pat Green on the jukebox. Pat could not attend the party, but he called from Hawaii and bought the whole bar a round of drinks. Among other artists, Django Walker played one of his first gigs at this event. He has been a permanent fixture at our annual party ever since. It was the party that would launch us to the next level. We continued growing the "Tore Up From the Floor Up" website/community and put together more gatherings with our new found friends.
After the third annual GreenFest things began to really take shape for the Tore Up movement and began expanding beyond its own boundaries. Soon after GreenFest 3 I met Brian "Doc" Monnone. Doc can be described simply as a Texas Music fan and web pimp. I asked Doc to help me with version 2 of the Tore Up website. What we came up with was awesome. Doc helped me create the Pat Green Fan Association website that I had been trying to do for years. The website was interactive and amazing. The response was greater than we had experienced as a group and as a result the three of us, myself, Tank and Doc decided we needed our very own virtual place where the community can gather anytime they wanted and discuss all things Texas Music and just about everything else.
About this time Pat was in the process of releasing an Official Fan Club, "The Dancehall." We had some discussions with Tank about the direction of Tore Up and what we were going to do to keep our idea alive. We understood that Pat's decision to create his own Fan Club outside of the one we wanted to create would split the choir. I talked to Pat about using the name Galleywinter to create a website for everything Texas Music. Pat told me to rock it out, thank you Pat Green. The first installment of Galleywinter was born.
Our idea was to build an online Texas Music community for the fans, by the fans. This soon became our mantra. Galleywinter started as a crude message board complete with little or no identity. The community exploded way faster then any of us could imagine. The foundation was truly being built by the fans. It was decided to give Galleywinter a face lift to become what you now see. We incorporated articles, interviews and photos and in early 2004 version 2 was released. This past year we brought on our fourth admin, Brad Beheler, who plays an integral role in developing many of the articles and interviews on the site as well as keeping tabs on memberships and the Galleywinter population at large. We are currently in version 3 of Galleywinter and this exciting new version of the site has further integrated the fans in what we do. We always laugh that people say that we run Galleywinter, but in reality it's only our ability to choose the best fans to help us lead the forums, write articles, plan pre-show dinners and party's and just generally be involved in what we do. Without the fans, we'd just be 4 guys sitting around talking to ourselves. Tank, Doc, Brad and I are the brains behind this place we call Galleywinter, but don't you worry, Woodrow will still get you to the show and drive the crucial thirty miles to the crash pad!
Galleywinter will forever remain a free resource for the fans, by the fans. Turn it up.
